How to Avoid Gaining Weight Following Phentermine Treatment

It’s not easy to lose weight, even when taking phentermine; what’s more, research has shown that almost 8 out of 10 people who manage to shed weight, eventually put it back on! Does this also mean that keeping those extra pounds off of you is harder than losing them in the first place? In this post we describe how it is possible to avoid gaining weight after being on phentermine, and how to keep it off, so that you belong to the lucky 20% that don’t regain the weight they lost.

Start Strong to Go On

Phentermine is good, but not magical – it doesn’t make fat vanish! Consider it more of a boost that sets you in orbit with regards to healthy eating and training. So, the best way to take advantage of phentermine is to exploit the burst of energy you get from it by doing exercises that you really like, increasing your chances to keep doing them even after reaching your weight target.

The same applies to healthy eating; phentermine is an appetite suppressant, and through this action you get the chance to find out which foods are more satiating, which ones provide you with more fuel and which make you feel lethargic and bloated. To lose weight you must make good eating choices, such as always have breakfast, drink lots of water and pack your lunch to work instead of eating ready meals; furthermore, these choices should stick with you even after phentermine treatment is over.

Tips to Avoid Gaining Weight Following Phentermine Treatment

If you have reached your target weight, or you are nearing it, then follow this advice to avoid gaining weight when you stop taking phentermine:

1. Measure Your Weight Every Week

Keeping your weight steady is an act of balance; it is common to be lighter on week and heavier the next. These are normal ups and downs, often resulting from things such as your period or a meal heavy on salt the day before. Nonetheless, it is important to note these fluctuations and restrict yourself if they become more frequent, as this is the secret into maintaining your weight for long periods of time. After all, it is less of a hassle to lose an extra pound, than having to shed off ten.

2. Look Forward

Following a period where you have been accustomed to eating according to a predetermined diet plan, going back to unplanned eating may prove a disaster; that’s why it is recommended to follow a maintenance strategy that will ensure you keep those pounds off, when you stop taking phentermine. The best diet plan in the world is the one you can continue following indefinitely, without feeling oppressed. Therefore, you can build it according to what you have been eating during your weight losing days, with a bit more freedom for extra calories, but still under control.

3. Count your Calories

In the same manner that no universal diet plan exists for each and every one of us, how many calories you may ingest daily to lose weight with phentermine is influenced by several distinct factors; it’s the same with maintenance calories as well. The most suitable way to safely reach your maintenance caloric level is to gradually add 100 calories every day for the first week, compared to what you were eating while on a weight loss plan, and adjust them accordingly to when you start putting on weight again.

4. Prefer Satiating Foods

A calorie is a calorie, but not all of them are the same. You should still opt for nutrient-dense foods for your extra calories, trying for meals that quench your hunger for longer. Thus, avoiding empty-calorie foods, packed with trans-fat and highly processed meals such as candy, cakes, chips and fast food and opting for fresh vegetables and fruit, nuts, seeds, legumes, lean protein and whole grain starchy carbs, is a good idea.

5. Keep On Working Out

It is a consistent research finding that physical exercise raises the chances of successful weight maintenance, especially if you used to work out during weight loss. There is more to physical exercise than just losing weight, including benefits of the mind: people who exercise are more content with themselves and they feel happier with their new highly-active lifestyles. Thus, you need to remind to yourself how much your mood has improved with exercise. By doing so, you will keep your motivation high and will abstain from rolling back to your old habits, gaining weight back following phentermine.

6. Adopt a Healthy Way of Life

Shedding off your excess weight is more than just diet and exercise; oftentimes, gaining extra pounds is the result of a general imbalance in your life that you need to address. Ensuring to sleep enough at night, keeping your stress under control, getting all the nutrients you need and tending to your social relations are all important factors in achieving a balance that will ultimately help you keep your weight in check.

7. Be Ready to Fight Weight Gain Again

It is possible that you’ll encounter difficulties sticking with your weight goals after phentermine, just as it may have happened during phentermine treatment. Hence, you should be prepared for this possibility and be ready to fight with a few extra pounds after you finish with phentermine –after all, it’s much easier to lose 2 pounds than 10, that’s why you should keep a close eye on your weight. As a matter of fact, gaining weight after phentermine is a common symptom of withdrawal, probably resulting from the loss of appetite suppression and the added energy that phentermine used to provide you with.

  1. I only take 1/2 pill 18.75. I have lost almost 15 lbs since July 5. I’m thrilled. The phentermine has cut my horrible cravings. I’m afraid that they will return when I discontinue the medicine. Are there any over the counter suggestions? Can I reduce to 1/4 pill for awhile to see what happens? I’m not concerned about the energy boost (I don’t drink caffeine and can always add that) as much as I’m afraid that I will have cravings and feel I satisfied all day.

My eating has always been reasonable and I exercise. Phentermine and eating less carbs are the only changes I have made in order to lose the weight. I still eat at restaurants and live as always so I can only deduce that it Has been the phentermine.

How can I continue to maintain without it?

  2. Hello Phentermine Users;
For the past year I have been trying to lose weight. I went and saw my Doctor who ran blood tests she checked my thyroid to my sugar levels etc.… everything came back ok. She decided let’s try Phentermine she put me on 3 month supply I have great results in the beginning. I lost 5 pounds after being on the drug for a month. I just weight my self again this week with starting the last supply. I gained back 5 pounds. I have been watching my portions and working out on a regular basis. I don’t understand why I am gaining weight back. Has anyone out there been experiencing any of my issues and what have you done? What has your doctor recommended you do when you doing everything right??

    1. My fitness Pal…
Try counting your calories. Ask your doctor what caloric deficit you should keep in order to continuously lose. Stick to the calories and continue doing what you are doing. Drink lots of water and sugar free drinks like herbal teas.

    2. My Doctor told me that there is something else to take when I stop. He will prescribe a different pill to help depress your appetite. I am sorry, I can’t remember the name.
