DEA Warnings About Phentermine

Phentermine is a highly effective weight loss drug. To the point that some people will consider using it even without getting a prescription from their doctor first. They turn to black markets or they get it from friends and family members with a prescription.

Many people get so caught up in their need to lose weight that they choose to ignore the potential negative side effects that can come with taking phentermine. This is why the DEA issued warnings against using the drug without a prescription and the strict supervision of an authorized medical officer, such as a GP.

Phentermine is classified in other countries as a Schedule IV drug under the Convention of Psychotropic Substances. The United States classifies it as a Schedule IV Controlled Substance under the Controlled Substances Act.

A local doctor in San Antonio says that phentermine is still in high demand, as reported by Fox San Antonio. Phentermine diet pills can only be obtained legally through a prescription, which is given by a doctor. While the drugs are safe and legal, they aren’t for everyone.

The history of phentermine can be traced back to the 90s when the diet pill Fen-Phen was released. The “FEN” refers to the appetite suppressant fenfluramine and the “PHEN” refers to phentermine; a kind of amphetamine. Even though the drug had a catchy nickname and offered miraculous weight loss, the pill proved too good to be true.

The drug Fen-Phen was pulled from the market because it had negative side effects. It caused heart disease for some people and even damaged heart valves, according to Dante Sorianello, Assistant Special Agent in charge of the San Antonio District for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Phentermine remained on the market as it was. Dr. Robert Yarrington, Family and Sports Medicine, reports that they constantly get phone calls from people asking for weight loss pills, with the callers often asking for phentermine specifically.

The drug has proven more popular with women. This could be because women are more attuned to their appearance and are generally more concerned about it.

The burden of attractiveness is placed primarily on women and they have a need to be slender and attractive. Phentermine can help with that, and many women who ask for phentermine are only concerned about that.

They don’t care much about nutrition or exercise, and would rather have a pill that they believe can take care of everything.

Phentermine on its own isn’t as effective at melting pounds as the combination of Fen-Phen, but it still does a remarkable job at suppressing appetite to help people lose weight.

People can safely lose weight at a rate of around 1 – 2 pounds per week, and phentermine helps with this because of how much it suppresses appetite.

Even so, the DEA does warn users that phentermine is still a controlled substance and that they should think twice before they share it with other people.

Sharing prescription drugs is never a good idea. For a start, it’s technically illegal to do anyway. But it can have serious side effects on the people you share it with.

Taking drugs that aren’t prescribed to you can even cause death because it may interact with a condition that you didn’t know you had and didn’t know the drug reacted badly to.

Still the Market Leader

Phentermine has continued to dominate the market even though the FDA has approved four new weight-loss drugs since 2012. They all entered the market with a lot of fanfare but their sales fell well below expectations.

Phentermine – first approved in 1959 and now manufactured by many companies under many names – still commands a solid 80% of the diet drug market, according to IMS Health, which tracks the use of prescription drugs.

Phentermine is relatively inexpensive, selling for around $30 for a full month’s supply. The newly approved drugs can cost several hundred dollars per month and they aren’t covered by all insurers.

Phentermine was used in the 1990s as part of the combination treatment fen-phen. This weight-loss sensation was later shown to cause heart-valve problems for some patients.

The other drugs commonly used in the fen-phen combination – fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine – were taken down from the market. Phentermine, which isn’t known to cause heart problems by itself, was allowed to stay on the market.

Because phentermine was approved at a time before drug companies were held to the standards they are now, there haven’t been many formal trials on phentermine.

Even so, patients who want to take phentermine have to be screened by their doctor. The drug may exacerbate existing heard conditions and it could be abused by those with eating disorders.

Phentermine users can develop a tolerance and need a higher dose to get the same results. This is why the drug is only approved for short-term use for obese patients. It is prescribed in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program.

If you are looking to lose weight but aren’t classified as obese, or you want to maintain your current ideal body weight, then you should stick to a diet and exercise regimen. You can use phentermine alternative supplements to enhance your results.

The supplements that we recommend as phentermine replacements can mimic the performance of phentermine (albeit not to the same degree as prescription phentermine) but without any long-term negative side-effects.
